And it begins…

Today marks the first day of NaNoWriMo – National Novel Writing Month! As part of my 30 Before 30, I am participating in a global attempt to write a novel in one month. I’ve even wrangled my students into the fun!

That being said, I’m going to try my darnedest to keep up with everything. My word count goal is 30,000, so roughly 1,000 words per day. This is no small feat. In addition to noveling, I’ve still got to work my day job (which is usually also a night job. The work of a teacher is never done!), try to stay on top of planning and grading, write posts for you to enjoy, clean, do laundry, eat, feed the cat and dog, and now I’ve added train for a 5K to the list. I think I can manage it all. I’ve done as much, and more, in previous years. But I can’t lie that I’m not already exhausted by the prospect of all the work!

November tends to be a tough time for teachers. I am exhausted almost to the point of no return. I am worn out and fed up and desperately need some room to breath. But having goals motivates me, so working toward 30,000 words and training for a 5K will keep me inspired during the haul to Thanksgiving Break. There is a light at the end of this long, dark tunnel. And it is severed alongside pumpkin pie!

  1. Are you making the kids write for 20 mintues in complete silence every day? I AM!!! It makes for a very nice November, I can tell you that. Add a quick mini-lesson in there, plus an activity to practice (we’re reviewing how to write numbers / numerals tomorrow), and you’re done with your day! Hang in there, my friend…it’s along road, but there are glimpses of brilliance hidden day by day.
